Sofia Welcomes the European Space Expo

During its stop in Sofia, Bulgaria, the popular European Space Expo attracted 35,443 visitors and more than 35 schools.

European Space Expo in SofiaThe travelling European Space Expo’s made its most recent landing in Sofia’s Square Alexander I von Battenberg, from 16 – 25 May. Here, its interactive touch screen exhibits and unique visual design attracted 35,443 visitors. It also proved to be a popular field-trip destination for area school children, with more than 35 schools visiting the exhibition.

The expo was opened by Sofia deputy mayor T. Chobanov, who was joined by Alessandro Buttice, Head of Information Activities of the Directorate General for Industry and Entrepreneurship at the European Commission. During her opening speech, Dr. Guergana Guerova from the Sofia University discussed the importance of such space outreach programmes as the European Space Expo and expressed her gratitude for organizing the event in Sofia.

Throughout the week various informative sessions were held on such topics as Galileo, space and security, weather forecasting and the latest in space research.

Coming to a City Near You

The European Space Expo is an initiative of the European Commission aimed at illustrating the services and applications derived from such European space programs as Galileo and EGNOS in a fun, interactive and accessible way. The Expo focuses on showing how space and its applications provide benefits to Europe’s citizen and highlights the critical role played by the European Union in space and space-based technologies.

The exhibition, whose futuristic dome has been traveling around Europe for several years, is open and free to the public. Upcoming stops include Prague, Czech Republic (7 – 15 June) and Ljubljana, Slovenia (6 – 14 September). To date, over 440,000 people have visited the expo, we hope to reach half a million in Prague next week.
