EGNOS Safety of Life: Serving aviation for 10 years

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) Safety of Life (SoL) Service is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Since it was declared operational in March 2011, the EGNOS SoL Service has been supporting civil aviation by enabling approaches down to LPV (Localiser Performance with Vertical guidance) minima at airports across Europe.
The EGNOS Safety of Life service has been supporting civil aviation in Europe since it was launched in 2011.

Motol University Hospital – Prague’s largest medical facility – embraces EGNOS technology and becomes accessible even under harsh weather conditions.
Thanks to EGNOS, the European Satellite-Based Augmentation System, pilots can navigate through the clouds and fog, and land safely at the Prague-based hospital.

High accuracy and synergies in focus at UCP

European Space Week 2020 kicked off on Monday 7 December with the User Consultation Platform (UCP) plenary, where users from different market segments presented the results of work carried out during the UCP over the previous week. Copernicus users were included in the UCP for the first time, and possible services and applications arising from synergies between Copernicus and Galileo were very much in focus.

Online Workshop: EGNOS approaches for robust Helicopter Emergency Services

The European GNSS Agency, together with the European Helicopter Association (EHA), is organizing a joint workshop on the use of EGNOS for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). The online panel discussion, scheduled for Wednesday 18 November 2020 at 14:00 (CET), is open to private and public health organisations, HEMS operators, pilots, and relevant healthcare stakeholders.
The workshop powered by the GSA and EHA intends to familiarize attendees with the process of implementing EGNOS-based approaches for HEMS

ASECNA provides Africa’s first early SBAS Open Service based on the European EGNOS technology

Earlier in September 2020, the Agency for Air Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) started broadcasting a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) signal over Africa and the Indian Ocean. This marks the first SBAS open service in the region, modeled based on the European EGNOS.
The “SBAS for Africa and Indian Ocean” is based on the technology developed for EGNOS, the EU SBAS, managed by the European GNSS Agency (GSA) on behalf of the European Commission.

The EU Space Programme is evolving and so are the needs and requirements of its user community. The 3rd edition of the User Consultation Platform (UCP) will be held on 1-2 December 2020 as part of the preparatory phase of the 2020 European Space Week. The Consultation is open to user communities, industries, service providers and R&D leveraging space for the creation of applications, businesses, and innovation.
The User Consultation Platform (UCP) is a biennial event involving a wide range of users from 12 different market segments.

First Galileo Return Link Service Personal Location Beacon (PLB) to be released in Europe

The first Galileo Return Link Service Personal Location Beacon (PLB) developed under the H2020 funded Helios project will be released in December 2020 across 19 European countries.
The FastFind ReturnLink PLB transmits the user’s unique ID and GNSS location via the global network of Cospas-Sarsat search and rescue satellites

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) has just released its latest GNSS User Technology Report, providing a comprehensive analysis of latest GNSS trends and developments. With four Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) available and more than 100 satellites in operation broadcasting multiple frequencies, the GNSS industry is shifting towards the wide adoption of multifrequency receivers across market segments to meet the diverging user needs of emerging applications.

New Executive Director of the European GNSS Agency takes up office

On 16 October 2020, Rodrigo da Costa took up his duties as Executive Director of the European GNSS Agency (GSA), soon to become the EU Space Programme Agency. He was elected by the GSA Administrative Board on 15 September 2020 and met with the ITRE Committee of the European Parliament on 12 October 2020.
