The European Year of Rail brings attention to a number of topics important for improving the role of rail within the EU transport ecosystem. The recently published Policy paper “Challenges for European rail – getting solutions on track” by Jacques Delors Institute, highlights the main challenges and opportunities for the railway system evolution in Europe, focusing on increasing the rail attractiveness and make it the transport of choice for the decades to come.

View from Munich: 2021 a key year for the EU Space Programme

Following the challenges of 2020, this year will be a key year for the EU Space Programme, European GNSS Agency (GSA) Executive Director Rodrigo da Costa said at a panel discussion at the Munich Satellite Navigation Conference, which was held online on March 16-17. The GSA executive director went on to outline some of the upcoming events to look forward to in the year ahead.

Now open: new call for proposal to accelerate EGNOS adoption in transport

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) has launched a new Call for Proposals for the “Acceleration of EGNOS Adoption in Transport”. The objective of the Call is to foster EGNOS uptake in the European aviation, maritime, inland waterways and railway sectors. The deadline for submissions is 19 July 2021. Alstom pioneers the use of Galileo to help measure the location and speed of trains

In June 2020, Alstom became the first railway manufacturer to integrate certified data fusion algorithms for fail-safe train localization, using position and speed of trains based on GNSS data coming from multiple constellations including Galileo, the European Union navigation satellite system.

The 3rd edition of the User Consultation Platform (UCP) will be held on 1-2 December 2020 as part of the preparatory phase of the 2020 European Space Week. The Consultation is open to user communities, industries, service providers and R&D leveraging space for the creation of applications, businesses, and innovation.
The User Consultation Platform (UCP) is a biennial event involving a wide range of users from 12 different market segments.

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) releases the 3rd GNSS User Technology Report

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) has just released its latest GNSS User Technology Report, providing a comprehensive analysis of latest GNSS trends and developments. With four Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) available and more than 100 satellites in operation broadcasting multiple frequencies, the GNSS industry is shifting towards the wide adoption of multifrequency receivers across market segments to meet the diverging user needs of emerging applications.

New Executive Director of the European GNSS Agency takes up office

On 16 October 2020, Rodrigo da Costa took up his duties as Executive Director of the European GNSS Agency (GSA), soon to become the EU Space Programme Agency. He was elected by the GSA Administrative Board on 15 September 2020 and met with the ITRE Committee of the European Parliament on 12 October 2020.

Invitation to Tender: Integrity Service Complementing EGNSS High Accuracy

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG-DEFIS) has issued an Invitation to Tender (ITT) for a service contract to address how the future evolution of European GNSS (EGNSS) could be beneficial for innovative demanding applications. The new service contract shall assess the feasibility of an integrity service complementing EGNSS High Accuracy in the 2030+ timeframe.

New H2020 mission evolution studies on EGNSS-based rail safety service
