5 Lives
Search, Challenge, Fight, Care, Rescue for Lives

Background & Objectives

When helicopters are used under distress or under dangerous situation where life is at risk, the use of European Satellite Navigation services is representing an added value. One of the 5-LIVES project objectives is to focus on the Helicopter Visual RNAV with EGNSS by extending the Visual RNAV concept (under development at ICAO level mainly for fixed-wing) to the rotorcraft operations so this segment can also take real benefit of new GNSS technologies.

Another objective addresses to the Helicopter IFR procedures through installation and certification of the equipment and also the procedure design and validation. Moreover, the 5-LIVES project will demonstrate the technical feasibility of Advanced curved trajectories for constraining environments. Today, there is no procedure with such characteristics available for helicopters worldwide and thus, it represents a clear challenge.

Regarding the Galileo guidance for Unmanned Air Vehicles, the 5-LIVES project is planned to perform the first Search and Rescue demonstration based on a UAV guided by Galileo and EGNOS while it will also extend the use of EGNSS in accurate positioning for ground emergency management. The overall project objective is to provide innovative solutions in order to overcome actual operational weaknesses, but specially trying to deploy the use of EGNSS for all rotorcraft market segments and operations.
