From Online Learning to University Credits: EU Space Academy’s Growing Success in Finland
The EU Space Academy Learning Platform continues to grow, providing EU space educational resources to over 4,200 registered participants. With courses on space technologies, their applications, business, security, and more, the EU Space Academy provides a free educational platform for students, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and professionals alike. The EU Space Academy is also building partnerships with universities, offering tailored content to meet the diverse needs of students and young professionals interested in space.
Tampere University as a space education pioneer
The first partnership of this kind has been implemented with Tampere University. Recognised as one of Finland’s top institutions and with a total of over 23,000 students, Tampere University brings together research and education in technology, health, and society. In collaboration with the Finnish Institute of Technology (FiTech), Tampere University continuously enriches its curriculum by offering a broad range of specialised courses on technology and beyond, including nationally accessible online studies for both degree students and lifelong learners. As part of this, EU Space Academy content has been integrated into the university’s teaching activities.
Topics such as the EU Space Programme, the European space ecosystem, and how to build a business in space have been incorporated into the course “Fundamentals of Space Economy.” This self-paced course was offered online and allowed students to engage with EU Space Academy materials and earn credits upon completion. Five of these modules were freely chosen from the Academy’s offerings to provide flexibility in tailoring the students’ learning to their interests. To further strengthen the collaboration, the university also organised interactive discussion sessions with students. Due to strong interest, the course will continue in the next academic year and reopen to students in autumn 2026.

By engaging with the course materials, students gained:

The course content proved relevant to students from various backgrounds, reflecting the rapid growth of the space industry and its wide-reaching appeal across disciplines. The students particularly valued the opportunity to learn directly from industry and academic experts, gaining practical insights into the realities of the space sector.
According to the Professor Heidi Kuusniemi “Students had also been particularly enthusiastic about the self-paced nature of the content implementation, which was described as essential, especially for working professionals and part-time students. Moreover, the opportunity to discuss the course materials in feedback sessions facilitated by the university allowed students to express their thoughts and contribute to refining the course content”.

As exemplified by the collaboration with Tampere University, integrating EU Space Academy content into the curriculum offers numerous benefits for educational institutions and has proven successful for everyone involved. Universities gain access to high-quality, EU-funded resources that are already developed, saving valuable time and effort in creating new content. As the EU Space Academy evolves and introduces more resources, universities can grow alongside it, continuously enhancing their curricula with fresh content. In Finland, the course will also be made available more broadly through national cross-institutional study collaboration in the space domain.
Universities and academic institutions are welcome to follow the example set by Tampere University and integrate EU Space Academy content into their curricula. The flexibility of the Academy’s content makes it easily adaptable to each institution’s unique needs and goals, ensuring it integrates seamlessly with existing programmes.
