The European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) hosted the March 11 Taiwan Industry Collaboration Seminar. The event was part of the GNSS.asia project, which is managed by the European GNSS Agency (GSA).

The seminar, attended by 150 representatives from Taiwanese and European governments and companies, was opened by Ms. Victoria Lovenberg, Head of the Economic and Trade Section Taipei from EU Delegation.  It brought together technical experts and policy makers to share information on GNSS application trends, discuss potential business opportunities and build EU-Taiwan partnership in various ICT fields.

The objective of the seminar was to bring together the main stakeholders to spur EU-Taiwan research and industrial partnerships on GNSS applications and receivers. GNSS.asia follows twin paths of business link-ups and political cooperation.

Experts from the GSA, Taiwanese industrial research institutions, as well as major European and Taiwanese companies and innovative GNSS SMEs, gave presentations on the latest trends in the global GNSS market, best practices and potential business opportunities.

Justyna Redelkiewicz Musial from GSA encouraged more EU-Taiwan cooperation in Horizon 2020 Galileo-related research and innovation projects.

Car Communications

The use of satellites in the automotive sector was a key topic of discussion during the seminar. In the workshop session on GNSS receivers and sensor fusion, Paul Chou of the Taiwan Telematics Industry Association (TTIA) announced the establishment of the Global Network Satellite System Promotion Alliance (GNSSPA) working group. This initiative will promote automotive satellite applications in Taiwan (for civil business operations), and cooperate with related associations worldwide.

A session on telematics and car communication saw Michael Li from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan present developments in connected vehicles and their deployment status in Europe, and its development of cooperative Intelligence Transportation System (ITS). Francis Fang of the Ford Motor Company presented the company’s “AppLink” car connectivity and infotainment activities. Jeff Chen, CTO of Advantech Corporation Limited focused on the intelligent transportation which provides valuable and seamless services.

Towards Internet of Things

In the afternoon session TomTom, Alcatel Lucent and Decathlon presented innovative applications in Location Based Services. The trend was clearly towards Internet of Things and integration of different sensors, GNSS and indoor positioning techniques in order to achieve continuous tracking of objects and people.

GNSS.asia and ECCT

ECCT has been granted funding by the European Commission as part of the GNSS.asia consortium that includes five European chambers (China, South Korea, Japan, India and Taiwan) under the European Business Organisations (EBO) World Wide Network.

The GNSS.asia project, financed by the European Commission, aims to promote EU-Taiwan industry partnership in the GNSS downstream sector and is actively promoting opportunities for industrial cooperation with Europe. The GNSS.asia project is financed under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP7) and managed by the GSA.

“The objective is to spur EU-Taiwan research and industrial partnerships on GNSS applications and receivers.”
