On the 13th of November 2013, the European GNSS Agency's Executive Director, Mr. Carlo des Dorides, and GS1 Europe’s chairman Mr. Nicolas Florin signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Prague, Czech Republic. The primary objective of the MOU is to explore the possibilities of applying geo-location data in logistics using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), the GS1 Electronic Product Code Information Service (EPCIS) as well as EGNOS and the forthcoming European global navigation satellite system Galileo. Particular areas of action include improving the traceability of rail assets, transport logistic, and fostering the use of geo location in production processes.

To this end, the MOU establishes a general framework for efficient and mutually beneficial cooperation and technical support between the GSA and GS1 with regard to the use of GNSS technology. The two sides intend to use their respective competitive advantages to the benefit of organisations employing accurate, reliable and precise geo-location data in targeted processes.

In the framework of the MoU, the following forthcoming activities are to be performed:

  • Examine the potential for use of GNSS applications in the supply chain operations and supply chain visibility networks, such as the GS1 EPCIS infrastructure.
  • Identify future work on the standardization aspects of using geo-location data in visibility networks.
  • Provide support to European GNSS market development and exploitation activities
  • based on the GS1 standards.
  • Contribute to a report on the potential of using geo-location data in rail asset management.

“We are proud to be able to contribute to the efforts of the European GNSS Agency in raising the quality, precision of geo-location data. I view the Galileo/EGNOS location services as a valuable complement to the current location satellite systems in place, which, if used in conjunction with the GS1 system, could add significant value to an organisation’s product or asset visibility network”, said Nicolas Florin.

“It is with great interest that we would like support the growing interest in European global satellite navigation system by the logistic segment and to see that in the future, the Galileo and EGNOS signal will be contributing to the efficiency of the supply chain operations. The GS1 System as a well-established standard with a large user base has already proven its value to more than a million companies around the world. With technological innovations like RFID, which is improving the level of automation of logistics operations or European GNSS, delivering better availability of the signal as well as integrity functions, the localization services become more interesting and important for the users. In this regard, GS1 in Europe, delivering standards for the supply chain is a natural partner for Europe´s Galileo and EGNOS, which brings more reliability and improves overall GNSS performance for the benefit of the logistics applications“, said Carlo des Dorides

What is GS1?
GS1 is a neutral, non-profit, global organisation that develops and maintains the most widely used supply chain standards system in the world. GS1 standards improve the efficiency, safety, and visibility of supply chains in over 25 sectors.
With local GS1 Offices (Member organisations) in over 110 countries, and around 2,000,000 user companies, GS1 engages with communities of trading partners, industry organisations, governments, and technology providers to understand and respond to their business needs through the adoption and implementation of global supply chain standards.

What is the GSA?
The GSA is a European Union Agency, in charge of European GNSS programmes. The Agency's strategic objectives include the achievement of a fully operational GALILEO system and fostering the uptake of Galileo applications.
