H2020 EGNSS Call for Proposals coming next year
Through the next Horizon 2020 (H2020) call for proposals, the European GNSS Agency (GSA) is seeking Galileo and EGNOS-enabled applications to meet the evolving needs of various market segments.
According to the terms of the Call, applicants should focus on specific areas of innovation or activity, including:
- Green, safe and smart mobility
- Fostering digitisation
- Fostering societal resilience
- Protecting the environment
- Raising awareness
- Creating networks of industrial relationships
- International cooperation
The Call will open in October 2018 and the deadline for applications in all categories will be 5 March 2019.
Green, safe and smart mobility
According to the GSA, those applications that aim to foster green, safe and smart mobility should contribute to efficient, climate-friendly and safe transport solutions. For example, within the aviation, road, maritime and rail sectors, this could include applications relating to advanced navigation, connected cars, vessel navigation or autonomous trains.
The budget for this category of applications is EUR 10 million.
Fostering digitisation
Applications that foster digitisation should integrate such digital technologies as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, big data and robotics. Specifically, funds will be awarded to those proposals that facilitate the adoption of EGNOS and Galileo in mass markets, encourage the competitiveness of the European GNSS industry in mobile applications, and maximise public benefits by addressing such societal challenges as health, citizen safety, mobility and regional growth. Preference will be given to those applications that make the best use of innovative E-GNSS features like multipath resistance and authentication. Secure financial transactions, tracking solutions, augmented reality and commercial LBS are all examples of mass market applications that integrate digital technology.
The budget for this category of applications is EUR 4 million.
Protecting the environment, promoting societal resilience
Other proposals may focus on protecting the environment and promoting societal resilience through applications that support the wellbeing of EU citizens and emergency and disaster management. For example, search and rescue, surveying and mapping and efficient agriculture can all benefit from these types of applications. More specifically, as emergency and disaster management applications become increasingly important, they should integrate different sensors and position sources to better identify, locate and react in critical situations.
Successful proposals in this category will leverage Galileo and EGNOS differentiators in order to both increase effectiveness and reduce costs. If using the Galileo Search and Rescue service (SAR), the application should also leverage the Forward and Return Link Services to improve user safety.
The budget for this category of applications is EUR 4 million.
Awareness, networks and international cooperation
As it is more important than ever to raise awareness about E-GNSS competencies across EU Member States and Associated Countries, the GSA is also seeking applications capable of building industrial relationships by uniting private and public institutions around E-GSS services. These applications should support the competitiveness of EU industry by identifying strategic partners and developing market opportunities, promote incentive schemes and encourage the emergence of new downstream applications based on Galileo and EGNOS.
The budget for this category of applications is EUR 2 million.
