Celebrating 15 Years of the EU Space Security Accreditation Board
This year marks a major milestone for the EU Space Security Accreditation Board (SAB) as it celebrates 15 years of dedicated service as the independent security accreditation authority for the entire EU Space Programme components.
A Decade and a Half of Strategic Security support to the EU Space Programme
Established in 2010, the SAB has played a pivotal role in securing the EU Space Programme - supporting all components, promoting cybersecurity, and standardising security accreditation. As an independent authority, it brings together Member States under a unique governance model, making around 200 decisions annually, from satellite launches to system entry into operations and services declarations.
Milestone Event Highlights PRS user Segment maturity
To mark the anniversary, the SAB hosted a high-level event featuring, for the first time, all EU-based companies developing Galileo PRS (Public Regulated Service) receivers. During a dedicated exhibition, these companies showcased real-time PRS demonstrations, providing institutional and governmental attendees with a concrete view of the maturity of the PRS user segment. It is therefore obvious that the forthcoming PRS IOC (Initial Operational Capacity) and FOC (Full Operational Capacity) service declarations will go hand in hand with the effective deployment of PRS receivers in Europe.
Space Security in a Changing Geopolitical Landscape
The event also included high-level institutional, civil, and military stakeholders’ exchanges to reflect on the SAB’s achievements and the evolving security needs of the EU Space Programme. The event featured an institutional session, followed by two roundtables focusing on civil resilience and military readiness in the space domain. Key discussions centred on cybersecurity, threats, and the critical importance of the services for the users provided by the EU Space Programme.
Beyond its operational role, the SAB has embedded a security-first mindset throughout the EU Space Programme, making strategic early-on decisions, from technical-specific features up to EU strategic needs. Its contribution shaped the Programme and helped position the European Union to respond to today’s complex geopolitical environment - where both Defence of Space and Space for Defence have become critical priorities.
Looking Ahead: Standardisation, Cybersecurity, and Future Resilience
The SAB is actively preparing for future challenges. By standardising its activities - for example in cybersecurity - it strengthens the competitiveness of the EU space industry and supports the fast deployment of essential EU Space capabilities.
As the EU continues to implement its ambitious space policy objectives, the SAB remains a collaborative cornerstone of trust, vigilance, and resilience - ensuring that EU Space services remain secure and reliable for all Member States and European citizens.
Fifteen years ago, the Security Accreditation Board was established with a clear mission: to ensure independently the highest standards of trust, resilience, and security across the EU Space Programme. Today, as we mark this milestone, we not only celebrate our achievements - we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the European Union’s space assets and services in an increasingly complex and contested environment.
