This year marks a significant milestone in the journey of the Security Accreditation Board (SAB), as it proudly celebrates 15 years of dedicated service as the accreditation authority for the entire EU Space Programme and all its components.

Established in 2010, the SAB has made significant contributions over the years, including supporting the securing of the EU Space Programme components, standardising security accreditation practices, and promoting cybersecurity. The SAB has therefore played a key role in shaping the EU Space Programme, ensuring the security risks are known, and that security measures reduce those risks to an acceptable level, given the security needs of the Union and its Member States.

The SAB acts as an independent security accreditation authority. With around 200 strategic decisions made annually from satellite launches to systems updates or their operations, the SAB brings together Member States in a unique governance model that is independent of the European Commission, EUSPA, and ESA.

Marking this 15-year journey, the Security Accreditation Board’s anniversary highlights not only its key achievements, but also the spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility that drive its work. Looking ahead to the future, the SAB will continue helping the EU to achieve its EU Space policy objectives and reinforcing the security of the services provided by the Programme.

“Our mission remains clear: ensure that European Union’s Space Programme maintains the delivery of services to Member States and EU citizens, securely and trustworthy.” declared Philippe Bertrand, Chair of the SAB. “As the EU Space Programme evolves and the geopolitical environment is increasingly contested, the SAB responsibilities continue to grow.”
